Search Engines Make the "Web-Go-Round"
Let’s assume I am a South Bend resident looking for a carpet cleaning service. I own a puppy, and man, this place needs to get cleaned! I can go to the phone book, but it offers me no research of companies, testimonials, pricing, service, location, etc…
So, I grab my cup of coffee and pop down in front of the internet. When I open my Internet service, I will see two bars. One at the very top of the screen that says: http:// (and gives room to type in a specific web-site address). There will be another bar somewhere on the web page that says something like “Search the internet”. You may also notice (Verizon and AOL users) that the words “Powered by Google” are next to the bar.

What I do next is simple…I search the web. What do you think I will search for? South Bend Carpet Cleaners, St. Joe County Carpet Services, Carpet Cleaners in Northern Indiana? I will collect info, and make a call…This example is not only important, but it will become critically important as you learn more about Website Marketing in my tutorials.
So what is a search engine exactly?
A search engine is a massive directory of websites. It has the capability to search, and index websites, and can provide feedback to a prospective buyer on what it thinks are the best answers to their search. Let’s take one of the above examples.
Let’s say I am searching for my Carpet cleaner, here in South Bend. I go to Google.com which looks like this, and I type in the information listed below:
When I hit the search button, Google will begin looking through the tens of millions of sites that currently exist for matching search criteria. It determines then, two main things…
One of them is:
1. What websites are most relevant to the search, and places them in order on the following pages.
Note: This is commonly referred to as Organic Results. If a person clicks on your “Organic Results”, you do not have to pay for that visitor. Having your website optimized for good Organic Results can pay dividends for years to come. The other is:
2. Which Ad-Words are most relevant to the search, and places them in order on the left side of all concurring pages.
Note: This is commonly referred to as Pay-Per-Click advertising. This is where you can opt to pay for getting your advertisements out to the general public. When a person “clicks” on your advertisement, you get charged a certain amount for that qualified lead. One important thing to understand is that the better your site is optimized organically, the less you may have to pay for each visitor, and the higher your ranking will be on the Ad-Word List.
